Sculpture that will move your soul
Sculpture that will move your soul
The human soul yearns to escape the mundane distractions and live life to the full...take a journey through my story of figurative sculpture exuding freedom, perseverance and the passion from within!

Elizabeth Myrick Eckels is an American sculptor, who sculpts passionate figurative works in clay and wax for bronze castings. She studied sculpture at the North Carolina School of the Arts and received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Elizabeth possesses a unique ability to bring passion, turbulence, energy and emotion to her sculptures through the twisting and turning of the human figure.
Elizabeth's sculptures are inspired by her passion and quest to revel in God's amazing creation, along with the power of perseverance in life, and joys of overcoming. Her most recent work has been her most passionate, influenced by the pure beauty of the feminine form interacting with nature, a celebration of life!
Although Elizabeth exhibited decades ago as a teenager and college graduate, she, like many women, paused her dreams for a greater cause, raising precious children! As a teen, she won first place in the National Talent Search NY, and turned down a full scholarship to Pratt to attend Parsons School of Design on scholarship. During that time, she exhibited in 4 states, including NYC's IBM Gallery, and Foster Goldstrom Gallery, NYC. Although the Foster Goldstrom Gallery exhibition was a group show, she was humbled that her sculptures and painting were hanging among famous artists, like Georgio O'Keffe and Robert Rauchenburg. While her children were young, she served alongside her husband in the ministry and taught design at the Art Institute in Portland, and the International Academy of Design and Technology in Orlando. After more than 2 decades, she has returned to her first love, clay sculpture. She has been working for one year on completing a body of work and this is just the beginning! Her studio is at the Clay Center of St. Pete, where she also has started teaching clay techniques once a week. Now, for the first time EVER, she is able to sculpt as her primary focus and looks forward to emerging as an artist and future exhibitions after 20 + years.
Elizabeth resides in Tampa with her husband, 2 sons and pointer dog! When Elizabeth is not sculpting at the Clay Center of St. Pete, she enjoys boating in Longboat Key, exploring nature, attending performances, listening to Luciano Pavarotti, designing or spending time with friends.

I was always a people watcher, which worked quite well in high school, as my art director made us sketch ballet dancers for hours to capture the gesture of each pose. Nude models, posing for 1 minute in each pose for hours at a time, trained my eye to see the energy in each pose. Then I married a professional dancer in New York City and found myself sitting through ballet and modern dance performances looking for the moment that provoked emotion, passion and power. Although I am a figurative sculptor, it is the spirit, passion and vitality that I am sculpting within that figure.
Typically, I sculpt in clay, wax or other clay-like materials, that allow me to push and pull my hands through the material like a symphony, creating movement through the twist or stretch of the figure. Most of my pieces are painted with layers of paint, wax or glaze to create depth and accentuate the figure.
In the fast paced, often meaningless activities that cloud our vision, I am inspired to move one's soul to revel in God's creation, to remember the core energy and passion within one's inner soul.
If I can make people feel burning emotion, question their purpose by provoking joy or sadness, or remind them of who or what is important in life, then I as an artist have succeeded, raising the walking dead, reminding them of the passion and preciousness of life.
Although a lot of my earlier work was about the struggles and perseverance of life, similar to the anguish you see in Rodin’s works, my more recent works are more of a resolute joy, freedom, breaking away and confidence to not hold back. During 2020, my husband was hospitalized with Covid and I came close to losing him. During the same time, I had Covid with pneumonia in both lungs, making me weak for over a year. This trial of perseverance changed my sculpture! Similar to Kandinsky’s paintings to music, my sculptures are a musical with dancing, a celebration, a symphony that I must perform through my sculpture, because I, like everyone, do not know how many Acts are in my story called "life."

Following this excellent show, the following months have brought much hardship with Hurricane Helene, followed by Milton, as we experienced loss from both. My new work reflects my life experiences with new growth and exploration!
