Sculpture that will move your soul
Sculpture that will move your soul
"High upon a Rock" illustrates the water lines from hurricanes I have endured. Perched upon the rock is a tranquil figure, realizing that people, purpose and peace are more important than possessions.

Elizabeth Myrick Eckels is an American sculptor, who sculpts passionate figurative works in clay and wax for bronze castings. She studied sculpture at the North Carolina School of the Arts and received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Elizabeth possesses a unique ability to bring passion, turbulence, energy and emotion to her sculptures through the twisting and turning of the human figure.
Elizabeth's sculptures are inspired by her passion and quest to revel in God's amazing creation, along with the power of perseverance in life, and joys of overcoming. Her most recent work has been her most passionate, influenced by the pure beauty of the feminine form interacting with nature, a celebration of life!
Although Elizabeth exhibited decades ago as a teenager and college graduate, she, like many women, paused her dreams for a greater cause, raising precious children! As a teen, she won first place in the National Talent Search NY, and turned down a full scholarship to Pratt to attend Parsons School of Design on scholarship. During that time, she exhibited in 4 states, including NYC's IBM Gallery, and Foster Goldstrom Gallery, NYC. Although the Foster Goldstrom Gallery exhibition was a group show, she was humbled that her sculptures and painting were hanging among famous artists, like Georgio O'Keffe and Robert Rauchenburg. While her children were young, she served alongside her husband in the ministry and taught design at the Art Institute in Portland, and the International Academy of Design and Technology in Orlando. After more than 2 decades, she has returned to her first love, clay sculpture. She has been working for one year on completing a body of work and this is just the beginning! Her studio is at the Clay Center of St. Pete, where she also has started teaching clay techniques once a week. Now, for the first time EVER, she is able to sculpt as her primary focus and looks forward to emerging as an artist and future exhibitions after 20 + years.
Elizabeth resides in Tampa with her husband, 2 sons and pointer dog! When Elizabeth is not sculpting at the Clay Center of St. Pete, she enjoys boating in Longboat Key, exploring nature, attending performances, listening to Luciano Pavarotti, designing or spending time with friends.
Humans' greatest desire is acceptance. As people, we feel all sorts of emotions: joy, sadness, passion, anger, frustration, shame. But I, like many, were conditioned to hide these emotions and restrain the truth, put on a happy face, post your best side on social media and act like everything is great.

Humans' greatest desire is acceptance. As people, we feel all sorts of emotions: joy, sadness, passion, anger, frustration, shame. But I, like many, were conditioned to hide these emotions and restrain the truth, put on a happy face, post your best side on social media and act like everything is great.
My sculptures are typically made of clay, so I can fluidly and quickly express movement and emotion, striving to capture my raw feelings in the moment. What if we were all like children, expressing our emotions in a vulnerable, honest manner all the time? We would understand each other and be able to show compassion and savor joyful moments where we could celebrate each other's victories. In a post- covid world, many are lonely, missing the love of relationships and community. My goal is to express raw joy, security, beauty, pain and passion, often through the figure, sometimes combined with the beauty of natural obects. Since my husband was a professional dancer for many years, I associate the figure with emotion, often seeing emotions in the form of a dancing figure of joy, sadness or passion. My goal is to get inside people's emotions and help them realize they are not alone. We are in a world where we need to understand and help one another, have compassion on each others pain and celebrate each other's victories.
Similar to the anguish you see in many of Auguste Rodin's sculptures, my new Mountain Top series exemplifies figures that are overcoming their suffering with peace that comes from a higher place. This series is a product of suffering through hurricanes Milton and Helene. We also suffered through Hurricane Katrina years ago. The mental aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans combined with the pure destruction of Milton and Helene have pushed me to rely on God and push through the pain. This pain has led to a peace that does not come from circumstances. Many have been moved by these sculptures because they can relate to the pain, but they illustrate hope for their future, exemplifying how pain is a secret weapon producing hope for themselves and others!

Following this excellent show, the following months have brought much hardship with Hurricane Helene, followed by Milton, as we experienced loss from both. My new work reflects my life experiences with new growth and exploration!
